What’s your learning style?
Gregorc describes four distinctive and observable
behaviours: abstract, concrete, random, and sequential tendencies. A
combination of these tendencies is indicative of individual style. These
tendencies are reflective of in‐born
predispositions but individuals need to be capable of functioning outside their
natural style.
Four learning styles are identified:
Concrete
sequential: These learners engage in direct, step‐by‐step, orderly, sensory‐based learning and think in an
ordered, sequential and linear way;
Concrete
random: Experimenters, these learners demonstrate trial and error,
intuitive and independent approaches to learning;
Abstract
sequential: Lovers of theory and abstract thought, these
learners show logical approaches and a preference for verbal instruction
Abstract
random: These learners organize information through reflection and
thrive in unstructured, people-oriented environments, as they prefer holistic,
visual, experiential, and unstructured learning.
