Why do mothers always seem to hate their daughters' boyfriends?

"WHY does mum always hate my boyfriends?"

Millions of daughters across the world have asked themselves that question. And millions of mothers have wondered why their daughters' taste in guys is so messed up.

This tension between parents and their children's partners may have an evolutionary explanation, New Statesman reports.

A pair of scientists, Franjo Weissing and Bram Buunk, have published a study in the journal of Evolution and Human Behaviour, arguing that the problem comes from parents being forced to support their children financially.

Weissing and Buunk built a computer model which simulated the conflict between in-laws across thousands of generations.

Parents in the simulation were given the ability to divide their property between their children however they wanted. They chose to give more help to daughters who had chosen less supportive spouses.

As a result, the daughters began to choose "flakier" partners, forcing their parents to step in. And as you might expect, the parents reacted to this by pushing their daughters towards more reliable husbands.

That all sounds pretty complex, and perhaps a little sexist.

In any case, Weissing and Buunk think their model throws up a plausible explanation for the behaviour of parents in the real world.
