How To Drop The Expectations In Your Life

There’s enough pressure and expectations in our lives without us piling them on ourselves. It’s impossible to try and please everyone and we tend to e=be our own worst critics as we burden ourselves with too many unrealistic expectations. Letting go of these expectations can free us up to be happier with who we are, instead of always striving to be perfect. Here’s how to drop the expectations in your life:

1A: Look at whom you’re doing things for. Why are you working so hard at being perfect? Who are you doing it for? Examine the areas in your life where you’re putting lots of pressure on yourself to be perfect. Are you doing it for yourself and for your own validation? Or are you doing it to please someone else, look good in other people’s eyes, or to give a certain impression to other people? A lot of the expectations we have stem from our desire to please others and to look good to other people. If you aren’t doing something for yourself then it’s a good thing to stop doing, or at least lessen your efforts on.

2A: Act for yourself. Do things for your own sense of value and self worth, and because they make you feel good about yourself. Don’t do things to impress other people or to shape other people’s perception of you. What really matters is what you think of yourself, not what other people think. We also can’t control other people’s thoughts and perceptions, so you might be killing yourself to impress someone and not even get the results you want. Do things for yourself and whether other people like it or not, you’ll be happy with yourself.

3A: Stop comparing yourself to others. We are always looking at other people and making comparisons to see if we measure up. And because we are such harsh judges of ourselves, we usually don’t. This feeds the need to do more and try harder to be as perfect as we perceive other people to be. The first thing to do is to realize that the people you are comparing yourself too as just as flawed as you are, or as anyone else is. Next, try to stop comparing. You are your own unique person, not like anyone else, so trying to be like someone else is a battle that you’ll never win. Instead of comparing yourself to others, look inward and try to be the very best version of yourself.

4A: Be realistic. You’re setting yourself up to fail by creating expectations that aren’t realistic. This is not to say that you should have low expectations for yourself, but that you should be more realistic and accepting of just trying your best at something. Expecting perfection is just a way to guarantee failure because as humans we are never perfect. Instead just ask that you try your best at something and you’ll be more likely to be satisfied with your efforts than if you were trying to be perfect.

5A: Talk to your friends. They aren’t perfect either. So when you’re trying to accomplish something, want to look a certain way, or be able to do something that you think you can’t, try talking to your friends about it. Chances are they are striving for the very same things and also don’t feel like they measure up. Hearing other people talk about similar struggles helps you to realize that everyone is trying their best and no one is perfect. And if you think your friends are amazing just the way they are, then you should be able to feel the same way about yourself.
