How to Overcome Your Funk and Move Forward
Are You Stuck In A Rut?
It happens to all of us from time to time. Whether it’s
personally, professionally, or in relationships, we can all get down and feel
like we’re stuck in a rut. Feeling stuck isn’t fun but it can be overcome if
you take action. Here’s how to overcome your funk and move forward:
A1: Pinpoint. You
might feel like you’re just stuck in a rut in general, but there’s probably
something specific that’s driving it. Take some time to reflect to see if you
can pinpoint why you feel this way. Are you unfulfilled in your job? Working
towards the wrong major at school? Bored in your relationship? Need a new
hobby? Figuring out what areas are causing you to feel stuck will help you to
narrow down what you need to work on.
A2: Make
a small change. Anything will do. Get a new haircut, rearrange
the furniture in your room or get some new clothes. Sometimes changing up
something small can act as a catalyst for bigger changes. You’ll feel great
after doing something little and easy, and it can give you the motivation you
need to make other changes in your life.
A3: Talk
it out. Don’t keep your feelings bottled up inside of you. Talk to
your friends or your partner about how you feel. Talking will help stir up
ideas or can help you get to the root of the problem. Your friends might have
suggestions for you, and at the very least it will feel good to get things off
your chest.
A4: Get
away from it all. Gain some perspective on your life by getting
away from your daily distractions. Take a drive and go on a day-trip somewhere.
Go on a hike. Go and visit your Grandma for the weekend. Getting some space
between yourself and your daily life can give you a new perspective and a much
needed break. You’ll look forward to getting back after you’ve taken some time
away.
A5: Look
for inspiration. What people do you know who are doing
interesting and inspirational things? You can look at people you know
personally, or celebrities and public figures. See who inspires you and either
talk with them or just study up on how they got to where they are. Use them as
a positive inspiration to shape your own goals.
A6: Look
back. Reflect on your past to think of what brings you the most
joy? What did you love doing as a kid that you can get back into? Or what times
in the past did you feel stuck and what did you do about it. Our lives are rich
with experiences that we can continue to draw on and use, so go back into your
personal archives to see what’s worked for you in the past.
A7: Have
fun.
If you’re bogged down with work or responsibilities it’s hard to clear your
head and figure out what you want in life. Let go and take a break. Do
something that’s just pure fun. Go to an amusement park, go swimming, play with
dogs at the dog park, or have a picnic with your friends and linger all day
playing Frisbee and relaxing. Let yourself totally relax and forget about your
responsibilities. Being able to have fun will take your mind off of being
stuck. Sometimes the perfect solutions need to come to us when we aren’t
looking for them.
