Persuasion is something that we use in all of our relationships: with our partners, our friends, families and our co-workers. If you’re not a naturally persuasive person, don’t fret. Here are some tips on how to be persuasive in any situation:

1. Pick your time. Don’t try to pitch an idea to anyone when they’re distracted or really stressed out. If they are in the middle of doing ten things at once they won’t have time to really listen to what you’re saying and they can become dismissive or annoyed. Pick a time when they are freed up from some of their workload or errands, and they have time to sit and talk. You can just approach them naturally, or you can schedule a time to talk if they are really busy. Let them know that you want to talk to them about something, which gives them a heads up that you want their undivided attention.

2. Know your audience. You wouldn’t use the same persuasion techniques on your boyfriend that you would on your boss, mainly because they are two different people. Think about whom you’re talking to and think about what makes them tick. What do they ultimately want? Your mom ultimately wants what’s best for you, while your boss ultimately wants what’s best for the company. Understanding these nuances will help you to shape your arguments to what they want.

3. State what’s in it for them. People always want to know why they should go along with what you want, or what they’ll gain from it. Don’t make them guess – just spell it out for them. This shows that you aren’t just thinking about yourself and your own gains, but that you’re thinking of their feelings too.

4. State what’s in it for you. Don’t pretend that you’re only doing something for their benefit and that you’re acting totally selflessly. If there’s something in it for you then just put it out there and let them know that it’s something that you really want. They’ll see right through it if you’re pretending that you’re only doing it for them, so you might as well just be open about what you hope to gain too.

5. Put some emotion into it. Don’t just tell your boss that you want a promotion and what you’ve done to deserve it, but tell them how you’ll feel about getting it. Maybe you’ll get a real sense of accomplishment or validation, or maybe it will help to keep motivating you. Whatever the reasons, share them with them. They’ll see how much it means to you when you share some of your feelings behind it.


6. Address the cons. Every situation has pros and cons. Don’t pretend that this is a perfect arrangement that will only make everyone’s lives better. There are bound to be a few negatives and they will surely think of them. Address them straight up and show that you’ve thought of that too and have a plan of attack for how to address the cons. This shows that you’re thinking realistically and don’t just have stars in your eyes about a perfect situation.
