Brain Facts that you won't hear Any where
I love reading about the human brain and here are some facts you cannot find on Google. They are from books about the brain that I read:
1. Only 2% of your neurons are firing at any time. If the
brain used more than 2% of its neurons at the same time you would faint from
lack of nutrients. So, at rest, your brain uses 20% of all energy and of those
20%, that's just 2% of the brain so your brain weights just 2% of your body and
only 0.04% of your total weight use 20% of all energy used by the body. If you
push your brain to the limits, it will use 44% of all energy and that's 0.04%
of your total weight consuming 44% of all energy. What an amazing fact.
2. Your brain is just as developed as your body. When you
look at a very developed teen's body, his or her brain are just as developed as
the body. They work in perfect sync. Of course that if a teen develops faster
than average, it does not mean that other teens are not so smart, they will
eventually catch up.
3. Exercise boosts brain power, probably more than
anything else, as the brain gets more oxygen, nutrients, the arteries enlarge
to allow more blood to flow to the brain, exercises makes new connections in
the brain and also helps the release of dopamine, the most important chemical
to make neurons fire electrical signals between them.
4. Your memories are stored in the entire brain. There is
no single part where memories are stored. This was proven with mice and humans.
However, if you damage your brain's hipocampus you lose almost all your memory
as this is the region responsible to index new memories and to retrieve
information from older memories.
5. Vision takes 1/3 of all your neurons so when you need
to think hard, if you close the eyes you allow the brain to use its resources
from vision to your mental task.
6. On average each neuron connects with 10K other
neurons.
7. Most of your brain is not made of neurons, instead it
is made of connections between them. Actually, only ten percent of the brain is
composed of neurons.
8. The brain can live 10 days without water, 30 days
without food, but only a few minutes without oxygen because oxygen absorbs
toxic electrons.
9. Your brain learns slower as you age but once you learn
new stuff, you will perform better than kids or teens and even young adults.
This experiment was made with birds. They had glasses which distorted vision by
30º and scientists were able to prove that older brains learn just like new
brains, and despite taking longer to learn, once they master the skill they are
better than younger brains.
10. Your brain is capable of firing up to 2000 times per
second.
