A1: When we own a new territory, such as moving to a new home or school, we think ‘examine.’ We feel anticipation and we explore the new place leading to gain in knowledge of the territory.

A2: When we lose a valued object, we think ‘abandonment.’ This creates sadness and makes us cry. We then try to reattach to this lost object.

A3: When we eat something distasteful, we think ‘poison’ and we feel disgust. We behave by vomiting to eject the poison.

A4: When there’s a threat, we think “danger.” We feel fear and we want to escape so we can find safety.

A5: When there’s an obstacle, we see it as the ‘enemy’ which makes us feel angry and want to attack. Goal is to destroy obstacle.

A6: When we gain a valuable object, we think possession and feel joy. We try to retain or repeat behavior that got us the object.

A7: When we become a member of one’s group, we think ‘friend.’ This makes us feel accepted and we do our best to fit in leading to mutual support.

A8: When we experience an unexpected event, we think ‘What is it/this?” We feel surprised and we stop to figure things out.
